IYO Around the
World

The IYO is a global initiative spearheaded by the UNESCO’s
International Oceanographic Commission (IOC) to draw the attention of
the world community to the problems facing the oceans. This project is
now being implemented in several countries under various ocean-related
programs.
Man and Ocean: A Global Initiative. The Global
Initiative project was developed by UNESCO on Russia’s initiative, accepted
by the Russian and Portuguese governments and a number of major scientists,
and included by the IOC into the program of events dedicated to the
International Year of the Ocean 1998 with the recommendation to countries
to support it and to take part in it. Details at http://global_i.avrora.ru
APPEAL OF THE PARTICIPANTS OF GLOBAL
INITIATIVE
TO EVERY PERSON ON THE PLANET EARTH
Mankind is at the threshold of the third millennium.
10,000 YEARS AGO THERE WERE FIVE MILLION OF US.
TODAY THERE ARE FIVE BILLION.
What will we bring with us into the 21st Century?
Air, water, soil -- everything is dangerously polluted.
The volume of natural resources has diminished one hundred times
due to environmental pollution, social conflicts, wars,
unskillful management.
The destruction of Environment ruins people’s health,
brings down the production of food products,
turns backwards economic progress of dozens of countries
and is the biggest threat for our future.
Man is no longer living on this planet, he is trying to survive.
But we still have a chance to save our home and ourselves.
And a new step in this direction
will be the international program Global Initiative.
The major goals of this program are
to up-bring the young with a sense of regard for Nature,
to preserve health of Nature and Man,
to support cultural traditions -- achievements of civilization,
to propagate creative activities devoted to Nature and Peace,
to develop various forms of international contacts --
tourism and sports,
to promote scientific research for environmental protection,
to attract government and private businesses
to solution of problems of Mankind’s survival on this Planet,
to unite forces to protect the major resource of Nature --
THE WORLD OCEAN.
