Feedback on the assessment for the establishment of new MPA in Bitaug

Feedback from the baseline assessment was held on March 1, 2023, in Barangay Bitaug Covered Court in Enrique Villanueva, Siquijor. The meeting was participated by the Municipal Agriculture officers, Barangay Officials, Bitaug Fisherfolk Association, and the CCEF team. Mr. Dalton Dacal presented the Coastal and Marine Ecosystem overview as an additional understanding of the coastal zone. Also, Mr. Dacal was able to discuss the typical life cycle of coral reef fish species and the interconnectivity science of the Marine Protected Area. The result of the habitat assessment was presented and accepted by the Bitaug MPA stakeholders. Furthermore, the community were able to identify the boundaries of the proposed Marine Protected Area with a total of 34.59 hectares.

The creation of the Marine Protected Area in Bitaug was proposed in 2009. Community acceptance was the reason the MPA was not established in 2009. In 2018 the barangay council initiated a survey for establishing the BItaug MPA, which resulted in favoring the creation of MPA. A baseline assessment and proposed MPA delineation was conducted in 2019 led by the former Provincial Agriculturist Daryl Pasco and Barangay Captain Aldwin Magsalay. However, the creation of the Bitaug MPA was still not pursued due to lack of document support.
