Stakeholders Unite for The Danajon Bank Double Barrier Reef

The Danajon Bank Double Barrier Reef, located in the waters of Bohol, is a unique and fragile ecosystem that is home to a diverse array of marine species. Recognizing the urgent need for conservation, CCEF together with the different government agencies have joined forces to develop a comprehensive plan to safeguard this underwater treasure.

In a significant step towards preserving the natural wonders of the Danajon Bank Double Barrier Reef, an inception meeting was held at the Bohol Provincial Ceremonial Hall last June 19, 2023. The meeting brought together various Philippine government agencies, including the CENRO Talibon, PENRO Tagbilaran, DENR-7, BFAR-7, BPEMO , The Bohol-Danajon  Bank Double Barrier Reef Management Council led by the Governor of Bohol, Erico Aristotle Aumentado signaling a united effort to protect the Danajon Bank.

Representatives from the Governor’s Office of Bohol and local non-government organizations, Gerry Roxas Foundation and the Coastal Conservation and Education Foundation convened to discuss the proposed 2-year project funded by the USAID “Protect Danajon.”

During the meeting, participants engaged in fruitful discussions on the project’s objectives, strategies, and potential challenges. The importance of community involvement and stakeholder engagement was emphasized, highlighting the need for collaboration between government agencies, local communities, and environmental organizations.

The inception meeting served as a platform for sharing knowledge, expertise, and resources. It provided an opportunity for agencies to align their efforts, pool their resources, and establish a coordinated approach to protect and sustain the Danajon Bank Double Barrier Reef.

The project aims to implement various conservation measures, including the establishment of marine protected areas, sustainable fishing practices, and educational campaigns to raise awareness about the reef’s ecological significance. Additionally, the project seeks to promote responsible tourism that supports the local economy while minimizing negative impacts on the marine life.

The meeting concluded with a renewed commitment from all participating agencies to work hand in hand towards the successful implementation of the Protect Danajon Bank Double Barrier Reef Project.

Moving forward, the collective efforts of the Philippine government agencies, local communities, and environmental advocates will be formally launched and signed together with the different governors from Cebu, Bohol and Leyte (CeLeBoSoLe) in Bohol on July to ensure the long-term commitment and protection of the Danajon Bank Double Barrier Reef for generations to come.
