Marine Education Campaign Shapes Future Coastal Leaders

Last May 12, 2023, a remarkable event took place at Britech College, Liloan, Cebu, where seventy (70) attendees participated in the Coastal Conservation and Education Foundation (CCEF) Marine Education Campaign. The event brought together Grade 4 to Grade 12 students, faculty members, volunteers from Lear Engineering PETC, and CCEF employees. Graced by the presence of Britech College’s Vice-Principal, Veronica Baguio, RPm, LPT, the campaign aimed to educate the participants on critical marine topics and foster a new generation of responsible coastal leaders. The topics covered were Plastic Pollution, Coastal Ecosystems, and Sharks, all presented by CCEF Training Officer, Lloyd G. Yosoya, MBA. Additionally, the partner institution, Lear Engineering PETC, shared their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, highlighting their commitment to preserving our marine environments. The day concluded with a fun and educational Trivia Game, testing the attendees’ newfound knowledge from the campaign.

Empowering the Future of Coastal Leadership

Marine education plays a vital role in shaping the future of our coastal communities. By providing knowledge and awareness about the challenges faced by our oceans, marine life, and coastal ecosystems, young minds can develop a deep sense of responsibility and stewardship towards our planet. The CCEF Marine Education Campaign served as a platform to instill these values in the minds of the participants.

The campaign covered three essential topics:

1. Plastic Pollution: The impact of plastic pollution on marine life and coastal environments is a pressing concern. By understanding the consequences of single-use plastics and improper waste disposal, the attendees were encouraged to take action in reducing plastic consumption and promoting recycling.

2. Coastal Ecosystems: Coastal ecosystems are delicate and diverse environments that provide a wide range of ecological services. During the campaign, the participants learned about the significance of these ecosystems, the threats they face, and the importance of conservation efforts.

3. Sharks: As apex predators, sharks play a crucial role in maintaining the balance of marine ecosystems. The campaign shed light on the misconceptions surrounding sharks and emphasized their vital role in the health of our oceans.

Corporate Social Responsibility

LEAR Engineering PETC, as a partner institution, showcased their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives during the event. Demonstrating their commitment to environmental conservation, they shared their efforts to promote sustainable practices and support initiatives like the Marine Education Campaign. Their involvement highlighted the importance of collaboration between the private sector and non-profit organizations in safeguarding our marine environments.

Fostering Knowledge through Fun

The Trivia Game at the end of the campaign was not only an entertaining way to conclude the day but also a chance to gauge the attendees’ understanding of the topics discussed. By engaging in friendly competition, the participants reinforced their learning and retained valuable information that they can apply in their daily lives.

Project Go, Grow Grove: Making It All Possible

The success of the Marine Education Campaign was made possible through the collaboration of Project Go, Grow Grove, an initiative by Lear Engineering PETC, and the Coastal Conservation and Education Foundation, Inc. Their combined efforts brought this educational opportunity to the young minds of Britech College, sparking a passion for marine conservation that will undoubtedly shape the future of coastal leadership.

The CCEF Marine Education Campaign held at Britech College was a resounding success, leaving a lasting impact on the participants and fostering a new generation of coastal leaders. By imparting knowledge on pressing marine issues and the significance of conservation efforts, the campaign took a significant step towards building a sustainable future for our oceans. With the support of organizations like LEAR Engineering PETC and the dedication of Coastal Conservation and Education Foundation, Inc., marine education continues to inspire and empower individuals to protect our precious marine ecosystems for generations to come.
