Sumilon Island Sanctuary and the Southeast Cebu Coastal Resource Management Council (SCCRMC) wins first place in competetions for the Best locally managed MPAs and the Most Outstanding MPA network during the 2021 Para El Mar MPA Awards.
Sumilon Island Sanctuary is the first locally established marine protected area (MPA) in the Philippines, established in 1974 covering at least 39 hectares. Sumilon Island Sanctuary was also awarded as the Saviours of the Sea Recognition, a special award from the Philippine National Police Maritime Group in this year’s Para El Mar Awards 2021.
