Protect Danajon Project conducted the Municipal Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (MFARMC) Summit

November 16 – 17, 2023, Talibon, Bohol – In collaboration with Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources – Region 7, the Protect Danajon Project conducted the 𝗠𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗮𝗹 𝗙𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗔𝗾𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲𝘀 (𝗠𝗙𝗔𝗥𝗠𝗖) 𝗦𝘂𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘁, gathering representatives from ten LGUs along the Bohol Danajon Bank Double Barrier Reef. This strategic assembly aimed to enhance the Danajon Bank seascape governance 𝗯𝘆 𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗠𝗙𝗔𝗥𝗠𝗖𝘀 to deliberate on topics related to the 𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘀, 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝘀.

During the event, BFAR outlined MFARMC’s functions, including assisting in the Municipal Fisheries Development Plan, proposing Fishery Ordinances, and advising local legislative bodies. BFAR affirmed its commitment to aiding in the reorganization of the respective MFARMCs, while LGUs’ FARMCs expressed willingness to form an Alliance in the Danajon Bank area.

Simultaneously, Bohol Provincial Environment Management Office delivered a presentation regarding Bohol’s UNESCO Geopark designation, emphasizing the significance of this designation and its implications for the region’s environmental and cultural preservation.

Strengthening the capabilities of the MFARMCs, holds substantial 𝗯𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗼𝗵𝗼𝗹 𝗗𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗷𝗼𝗻 𝗕𝗮𝗻𝗸 𝗗𝗼𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗕𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗿 𝗥𝗲𝗲𝗳. This includes more effective monitoring and regulation of fishing activities, ensuring sustainable practices, and preventing overexploitation. The positive momentum generated by the summit is anticipated 𝘁𝗼 𝗲𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗲 𝗴𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗷𝗼𝗻 𝗕𝗮𝗻𝗸 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗼𝗻, providing a potent and effective strategy for the conservation of this crucial UNESCO Geopark site.
