Abstract | The Philippines is a mesmerising archipelago of more than 7,600 islands that cover nearly 300,000 square kilometres. It boasts a breathtaking array of marine life, including over 2,000 species of fish, ocean giants and cryptic animals that look like anything other than what they really are. A highlight is the incredible diversity of nearly 600 species of corals that geographically comprise seven to eight percent of the world’s coral reefs.
These reefs are critical for the livelihood of a large percentage of the population and are a major economic driver, attracting thousands of international visitors every year. However, like most coral reefs around the world, they are under threat. Urgent protection is required from rising sea temperature, destructive fishing activities, overfishing, poorly planned coastal development, and pollution. |
