Introduction
In the Philippines, the greatest marine biodiversity can be found in the mixed coastal fauna of the coral reefs, mangroves and seagrass beds. These habitats host well over 5,000 species of plants and animals, including, according to one estimate, 1,400 species of fish, 1,400 species of crustaceans, more than 900 species of seaweeds, and as an untold number of unknown species. More than 17% of the better known fish are endemic to the Philippines, and there are more than 90 genera and at least 400 species of coral known to thrive in Philippine tropical waters. This biodiversity is under constant threat, however. Already, the dugong and four marine turtles, particularly the hawksbill and the green turtle, are endangered because of the loss of habitat and overcollecting. |
