The Coastal Conservation and Education Foundation (CCEF), through its Networking of MPAs thru Coastal LGUs Alliance Project (NMCLAP) generously funded by the Unico Conservation Foundation, continues to strengthen community-based mangrove management in Southeast Cebu.
On February 18–19, 2026, the Nagkahiusang Mananagat sa Taloot (NAGMATA) successfully established its mangrove nursery in Barangay Taloot, Argao. This nursery serves as a vital resource for propagating Avicennia marina (“bungalon”) seedlings that will support rehabilitation and coastal protection efforts in Southeast Cebu.
To ensure proper management and sustainability, CCEF staff conducted the first quarterly monitoring on July 23. Out of 150 sampled seedlings from the nursery’s 1,500 bagged stock, 139 survived—reflecting a survival rate of 92.67%. The seedlings also showed a 52.54% growth rate, with height ranges increasing from 6–47 cm (baseline, March 18) to 8–57 cm (July monitoring). Leaf counts ranged from 1–28, compared to the baseline of 2–22.
These results demonstrate encouraging progress in seedling growth and survival, while also highlighting areas for improvement in nursery maintenance. Regular monitoring will continue to provide valuable data for guiding restoration strategies and ensuring the long-term sustainability of mangrove ecosystems in Southeast Cebu.
