History:
The establlishment of the sanctuary started with a visit to the Mayor led by Dr. Angel Alcala of SUAKREM on July 1, 2002. Discussion was focused on the establishment of a marine sanctuary at Plaridel, Misamis Occidental. The following day, an initial coral reef survey was conducted to identify a potential site. On July 23,2002, two students from Silliman University arrived to serve as Community Organizers and a report on the initial survey was submitted to the Mayor’s Office identifying Baobaon, Barangay Panalsalan as a potential site. A socio-economic survey, fish catch assessment and socio-economic impact of declining fish catch was conducted followed by a massive IEC in coastal barangays. In July 2003, mapping and installation of marker points for the sanctuary was conducted.
