MAREd Ocean Education Program 2025 Launches at Tingo NHS

September 6, 2025 | Tingo, Olango Island, Cebu – The Marine Education Committee (MAREd), in collaboration with the CCEF and Peace Corps Philippines, officially launched its third annual Ocean Education Program at Tingo National High School (TNHS). This year’s program marks a significant expansion of MAREd’s mission to promote ocean literacy and honor the legacy of Michael A. Ross, the visionary founder of Talima Marine Protected Area (MPA).

Following successful events at Santa Rosa NHS in 2023 and 2024, the 2025 edition brought the Ocean Club model to TNHS, engaging 69 junior and senior high school students in a dynamic half-day kickoff session held at the school’s covered court.

The morning began with welcome remarks from Peace Corps Volunteer (PCV) Rachel Davis and the TNHS Principal, setting the tone for a month-long series of Saturday sessions focused on marine science, environmental action, and career pathways. Dr. Greg Hodgson, MAREd collaborator, delivered a compelling talk on the life and legacy of Michael A. Ross and the establishment of Talima MPA—emphasizing its ecological and economic importance to Olango Island and the Philippines.

Students then dove into coral reef ecology with Joey Gatus, CCEF Board Member and Marine Biologist, who led a hands-on clay animal modeling activity to reinforce reef biodiversity concepts. The interactive format allowed students to visualize reef species while learning about the threats and protections associated with MPAs.

This kickoff marks the beginning of a vibrant September series—Ocean Club Saturdays—where science, storytelling, and stewardship converge to inspire the next wave of ocean champions. As we set sail into the coming weeks, we celebrate the power of youth, community, and collective action in shaping a more resilient and connected marine future.
