November 25–26, 2025 Oslob, Cebu — The Coastal Conservation and Education Foundation (CCEF), in partnership with the Local Government of Oslob through the Municipal Agriculture Office (MAO) and the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO), successfully conducted a two-day Marine Protected Area (MPA) Management Planning Workshop aimed at strengthening community-led coastal governance. The activity brought together barangay fisheries leaders and fisherfolk officers to build local capacity, enhance coordination, and lay the groundwork for more effective MPA management across the municipality.
The workshop opened with a discussion on the importance of strong local governance and community participation in sustaining Oslob’s MPAs. Participants reviewed current conditions, enforcement challenges, and management gaps, gaining a clearer understanding of the ecological and social factors influencing their coastal areas. CCEF facilitators guided the group through hands-on activities, including assessments of existing MPA conditions, identification of key issues, and collaborative visioning exercises.
In the afternoon, participants engaged in practical workshops that helped them analyze seasonal patterns, climate influences, and fish catch observations—insights that are essential for informed decision-making. A SWOT Analysis further enabled them to identify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats affecting their MPAs, setting the stage for strategic planning.
Day 2 focused on translating these insights into action. Building on the previous day’s outputs, participants crafted vision statements and developed SMART goals tailored to the needs of their respective MPAs. These initial planning outputs will serve as the foundation for the development of comprehensive, community-driven MPA management plans aimed at improving enforcement, strengthening monitoring systems, and deepening community involvement.
This workshop helped set the tone for Oslob’s next steps in coastal management. With stronger collaboration and a clearer path forward, CCEF and LGU Oslob are helping local leaders shape MPA plans that can genuinely support healthier reefs and more resilient communities.
