| Abstract | Coral damage from typhoon Sendong in the year 2011 and typhoon Pablo (Bopha) in 2012 was assessed in selected marine protected areas (MPAs) along the eastern coast of Siquijor Province. This damage was estimated at 40-99% in the year 2013 and coupled with coral reef fish declines in some sites. Lowest live hard coral damage was seen in Binoongan Marine Sanctuary (42.22%) in the municipality of Enrique Villanueva and highest in Olang Marine sanctuary (99.94%) in Maria. Both MPAs in Maria were heavily impacted by typhoon Pablo. The responses of the different categories of coral reef fish varied per site. All reef fish and indicator species categories declined in most sites while target fish species showed no significant changes in the current year and increased in two MPAs. Highest decline in all reef fish (72.28%) was observed in Olang Marine Sanctuary. Target fish densities increased in Binoogan Marine Sanctuary and Talayong Marine Reserve while indicator species (e.g., butterflyfishes), decreased i the MPAs of Maria and Enrique Villanueva municipalities. Recommendations for coral reef rehabilitation and fisheries recovery are provided. |
