CCEF conducted the MPA Management Effectiveness Assessment Tool (MEAT) evaluation, documenting a key milestone for the Municipality of  Badian in the management of their eight marine sanctuaries. The assessment was conducted under Networking of MPAs through Coastal LGUs Alliance Project (NMCLAP), funded by Unico Conservation Foundation. The results of the assessment provide information regarding MPA performance, operation, and management gaps, helping promote and achieve MPA management effectiveness.

The marine sanctuaries remained at Level 0, with assessment scores ranging from 34 – 60 points– Zaragosa (46), Malabago (48), Lambug (34), Bato (52), Matutinao (59), Poblacion (59), Bugas (59), and Hinablan (60) due to the absence of MPA management plans.

Recognizing this gap, the local government unit of Badian through Municipal Agricultural Office (MAO), in coordination with with CCEF and Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Tanon Strait Protected Seascape (DENR-TSPS), will aim to facilitate the development of the municipality’s first comprehensive set of MPA management plans, covering all 8 marine sanctuaries.

The progress in Badian reflects the collaboration efforts of CCEF, MAO and DENR-TSPS  and coastal stakeholders. Guided by the gaps identified through the assessment, resolutions are created, ensuring the municipality does not slip back to its Level 0 operational status. The assessment results were translated into management plans and policy actions, providing a clear pathway toward stronger governance and long-term protection of Badian’s marine protected areas.
