Learning, Connecting, Conserving: ASEAN for the Peoples Week 2026 delegates explore Olango Island, Cebu

May 6, 2026 | Olango Island, Cebu, Philippines

The Coastal Conservation and Education Foundation (CCEF) successfully bridged local grassroots action with regional diplomacy by coordinating a milestone site visit for the inaugural ASEAN for the Peoples Week (AFPW) 2026.

In partnership with the Foreign Policy Community of Indonesia (FPCI) and the Olango Island Wildlife Sanctuary (OIWS), CCEF welcomed a diverse delegation of civil society leaders, youth representatives, academics, and media to the Philippines’ very first Ramsar Site. The visit turned environmental theory into shared regional action.

The immersive itinerary blended deep policy discussions with hands-on conservation work:

  • Environmental Dialogue: Delegates engaged in a strategic discussion regarding the OIWS and the San Vicente Marine Protected Area. The conversation tackled critical biodiversity management, local conservation hurdles, and the power of community-led partnerships.
  • Eco-Tour & Bird Watching: Participants explored Olango’s unique mangrove ecosystems, catching firsthand views of the sanctuary’s famous migratory bird species.
  • Coastal Clean-Up: Translating dialogue into immediate impact, the delegation conducted a beach clean-up, successfully removing marine waste from the shoreline.

Throughout the day, delegates actively exchanged best practices from their home countries, sparking new ideas for transboundary environmental collaboration across Southeast Asia.

Understanding ASEAN for the Peoples Week 2026

Convened from May 5–8, 2026, in Cebu, Philippines, AFPW ran parallel to the official ASEAN Summit 2026. The week serves as a crucial, civil society-driven platform designed to amplify citizens’ voices and foster multi-stakeholder dialogue.

Aligned with the ASEAN Community Vision 2045, this year’s broader AFPW program featured several high-impact tracks:

  • Capacity Building for ASEAN Journalists & Digital Storytellers
  • Documentary Film Screenings & Talk Shows
  • The Southeast Asia Lecture Hall
  • Track 1.5 ASEAN Community Building Forum
  • The ASEAN Community Town Hall

By anchoring regional delegates in the reality of island conservation, CCEF underscored a vital truth: regional policy is only as strong as its local implementation. Moving forward, CCEF remains committed to bridging communities, ecosystems, and civil society, ensuring that environmental stewardship remains at the absolute heart of ASEAN’s shared future.
