CCEF Introduces ACR Concept to Dalaguete’s Cawayan Marine Protected Area

October 21, 2025 | Brgy. Cawayan, Dalaguete, Cebu

The Coastal Conservation and Education Foundation (CCEF) introduced the Artificial Clay Reef (ACR) concept to the Barangay Council of Cawayan, Dalaguete, Cebu. The presentation highlighted the ACR system by rrreefs technology as a promising solution for restoring degraded reef habitats and enhancing fisheries productivity. The presentation was part of ongoing activities under the Networking of MPAs through Coastal LGUs Alliance Project (NMCLAP), funded by the Unico Conservation Foundation.

The ACR system uses 3D-printed clay bricks designed to replicate the complexity of natural reefs. These modular structures promote coral settlement, provide shelter for marine life, and are locally produced using earthenware, reducing carbon emissions and creating livelihood opportunities in ecosystem restoration.

📊 Recent monitoring from CCEF’s pilot site in Minalulan Marine Protected Area (MPA) in Maria, Siquijor, showed encouraging results: 88.6% of coral recruits settled on ACR bricks, with each hosting 4–5 recruits on average. Coral growth was visible in daylight dives, and fish biomass increased—indicating strong ecological response and habitat recovery.

Following these findings, CCEF is actively exploring opportunities to scale the initiative, with Barangay Cawayan in Dalaguete identified as a potential next site. A recent biophysical assessment revealed that reef areas within the Cawayan Marine Park and Sanctuary are significantly degraded, making it a strategic candidate for restoration.

While the Barangay Council led by Hon. Pedrito O. Codillero has expressed full support through a resolution and permit issuance, implementation is contingent on securing funding support. CCEF is currently engaging with potential donors and partners to mobilize resources for the next phase of the project.

This initiative is shaping a locally anchored approach to reef restoration, one that places science in the hands of the barangay and its coastal community. With technical insight guiding the process and local leadership driving it forward, the effort aims to spark long-term stewardship and offer a replicable model for marine recovery across Southeast Cebu.
