August 11-14, 2025, Argao, Cebu – As part of the ongoing Networking of MPAs thru Coastal LGU Alliance Project (NMCLAP), funded by Unico Conservation Foundation, CCEF facilitated a Training on Coastal Habitat Assessment Methodologies in Argao, Cebu.

The training capacitated 17 LGU personnel from Southeast Cebu ADABOSS (Argao, Dalaguete, Alcoy, Boljoon, Oslob, Santander, and Samboan) municipalities and Badian in standardized techniques for assessing mangrove forests, seagrass beds, coral reefs, and reef fish populations. This marks a critical follow-through activity from the Dive Certification Training held earlier in August, ensuring that certified divers are now equipped with the scientific skills to conduct habitat assessments.

This initiative directly supports the formation of the SCCRMC Council’s official coastal habitat monitoring team, enabling LGUs to independently assess, document, and respond to changes in their marine ecosystems. By localizing technical capacity, the project strengthens community ownership, data-driven decision-making, and adaptive management across Southeast Cebu’s MPAs.

Why It Matters
- 🧭 Localized Monitoring: Empowers LGUs to generate their own habitat data, reducing reliance on external assessments.
- 📈 Evidence-Based Management: Enables timely interventions and strategic planning based on real-time ecological data.
- 🤝 Council Cohesion: Builds inter-LGU collaboration under SCCRMC, fostering unified stewardship across municipal boundaries.
- 🌱 Sustainability: Ensures long-term monitoring continuity, even beyond project timelines.

This training is a testament to the power of strategic partnerships, community capacity building, and science communication in advancing marine conservation goals.
