Supporting Champion Communities: Fish Pot Livelihood Project Turnover in Sinandigan, Ubay, Bohol

January 15, 2025, Sinandigan, Ubay, Bohol – The USAID-GRF INSPIRE Project, in collaboration with CCEF, the Bohol Provincial Environment Management Office (BPEMO), and the Barangay Local Government Unit of Sinandigan, conducted the turnover of fish pot construction materials to the Kahugpungan sa Gagmayng Mag-uuma ug Mangingisda sa Sinandigan (KAGAMMASI). This organization, which manages the Marine Protected Area (MPA) in Barangay Sinandigan, was recognized as the Best Locally Managed Marine Protected Area in Bohol during the provincial search last December 10, 2024.

Fish pots, locally known as “bubo,” are sustainable fishing gear designed to selectively catch fish without damaging the seabed or endangering marine life. These traditional devices support responsible fishing practices, as they allow smaller, juvenile fish to escape, ensuring that fish populations can replenish over time.

This initiative commends KAGAMMASI’s dedication to marine conservation while equipping its members with sustainable livelihood opportunities using fish pots. By fostering economic stability, the project encourages environmentally responsible practices and ensures that resources are used sustainably. Additionally, it upholds equitable sharing policies to guarantee fair distribution of benefits among members, all while prioritizing the protection of marine biodiversity and the long-term viability of coastal ecosystems.

The project aims to inspire a vision where addressing immediate needs goes hand in hand with securing the long-term health of our oceans. It’s a testament to the power of communities working together to ensure that marine ecosystems continue to thrive, providing life, livelihood, and hope for generations yet to come.
