Assessing Marine Protected Area Management: CCEF’s Intervention in Sinandigan, Ubay, Bohol

On February 2, 2024, the Coastal Conservation and Education Foundation (CCEF) undertook a significant initiative in barangay Sinandigan, Ubay, Bohol, conducting a comprehensive assessment using the Marine Protected Area Management Effectiveness and Assessment Tool (MPA MEAT). This assessment aimed to evaluate the status of the Sinandigan MPA and gauge the effectiveness of its management strategies, laying the groundwork for targeted interventions. The management of the Sinandigan MPA falls under the purview of the “Kahugpungan sa Gagmayng Mananagat ug Mag-uuma sa Sinandigan (KAGAMMASI)”, the local management body.

The event garnered substantial support from various offices, spanning from municipal to barangay levels, including Mr. Mansueto Diangco, the private secretary of the mayor and CRM Officer, Hon. Jimmy Dabalos, the barangay captain of Sinandigan, Mr. Jose Cuyno, the PO president of KAGAMMASI, and the dedicated CCEF team.

The focal point of the occasion was the MPA MEAT Assessment conducted by the CCEF team, comprising Evelyn T. Deguit, serving as the CCEF Interim Executive Director; Generoso O. Madrona, fulfilling the role of Project Coordinator for the Protect Danajon Project; Ranie Ibañez, acting as the CCEF CRM Officer; Sharmaine Joy C. Diez, who serves as the Project Coordinator for the SEE Conservation project; Justine Jace R. Baisac and Francis Miguel Z. Isok, both functioning as Communications for Development Associates; and Marie Ann B. Lausa, tasked with bookkeeping responsibilities. The evaluation unveiled an encouraging level 3 rating for the Sinandigan MPA, indicative of commendable management practices.
