Sumilon Island in Oslob, Cebu, and Olang Marine Sanctuary in Maria, Siquijor have officially made it to the top 5 finalists in the 2021 Para El Mar MPA Awards!
Established in 1974, Sumilon Island is the Philippines’ first locally established Marine Protected Area and has been cited by many for how coral reef sanctuaries contribute to improved reef fisheries management.

Olang Marine Sanctuary is also not far behind! Olang Marine Sanctuary is the second biggest marine sanctuary in Siquijor and was established in 1988. Its coral reef area was heavily devastated by Typhoon Nitang but through CCEF Project FishCORE and ISDA, Olang Marine Sanctuary is now one of the most successful sites in coral reef rehabilitation in Siquijor.
