The project aims to provide an alternative livelihood for the People’s Organization (KAGAMMASI). The alternative livelihood identified is using “bubu” or fish traps and providing a boat for their passive fishing gear. This also serves as their service to patrol in their MPA.
During the turnover ceremony, the activity was graced by the USAID-GRF INSPIRE Chief of Party, Ms. Rebecca R. Paz, together with Ms. Camille Agila, Monitoring Officer. Attending also is Sinandigan’s Barangay Captain, Hon. Jimmy Dabalos, and together with him is his barangay council. Lastly, the officers and members of KAGAMMASI are the beneficiaries of the project.
The event, organized with the assistance of the Sinandigan Barangay Council, was coordinated by Generoso Madrona, CCEF’s Project Coordinator, and Rani Ibañez, CRM Officer. Hon. Jimmy Dabalos welcomed guests and attendees with an opening speech, followed by a presentation on the project’s background by CCEF’s Executive Director, Evelyn Deguit. The official turnover was then led by Ms. Deguit and formally accepted on behalf of KAGAMMASI by Hon. Jimmy Dabalos. The ceremony concluded with a photo opportunity.
Hon. Jimmy Dabalos outlined the eight rules and regulations governing their alternative livelihood initiative. He highlighted that the fish traps are strategically placed to avoid damaging critical marine ecosystems. He also discussed the harvest-sharing scheme, which allocates a portion of the earnings to the organization to ensure sustainability. Lastly, Hon. Dabalos assured everyone that the granted alternative livelihood would not only be sustainable but also support the conservation and protection of their Marine Protected Area (MPA).
Ms. Rebecca R. Paz delivered an inspiring message to the members of KAGAMMASI, expressing her gratitude for witnessing an event where a community organization collaborates to improve their livelihood while safeguarding marine resources. She highlighted that KAGAMMASI sets a strong example for others, demonstrating how unity and dedication to protecting vital resources can lead to long-term success and sustainability.
